A Rude way to start the day

October 14, 2010

The philosophy behind food company Rude Health is to “make breakfasts that a King would want to tuck in to”. Whilst not a King, I found that Rude Health’s breakfasts were certainly something I wanted to tuck into. The packaging alone makes you want to eat their food before you have even opened up the box. Smart and organic, they exude the look of something that’s high quality but also good for you.

My daily breakfast routine varies according to how close to payday it is and whether I’ve been out the night before. Bran flakes with a handful of raisons is my usual breakfast of choice, with the occasional dabble into granary toast with marmite. I once tested out a box of no-added sugar alpen. But as I’m not a fan of food that is void of all flavor, I relished the day when the box came to an end. That experiment was not to be repeated.

Needless to say I was pretty excited to taste some of Rude Health’s breakfasts to try and get out of my breakky rut. Rude Health make porridge, muesli, granola and cereals which have no added salt, refined sugars or rubbish in them. They concentrate on using natural ingredients to add taste to their products like honey and maple syrup.

I tried out their Fruity Date Porridge and Organic Granola. Not usually a massive fan of porridge, I found this porridge pretty tasty, yet not full of sugar. It felt like I was eating something that was good for my body. The dates, apricots and hit of cinnamon made me feel all warm inside whilst our office continues to get colder day by day.

And the granola. Aah the granola. I love granola but am usually put off buying it because every box seems to have a ridiculously high sugar content. Rude Health’s granola was some of the most delicious I have tasted in a long while. And again, like the porridge, it doesn’t feel full of sugar and rubbish. Its flavor comes from the honey and date syrup and the nuts and oats give the perfect crunch. Not too sweet, it doesn’t taste like you are eating something which has a super high sugar content (plus, the sugars are natural so that’s good for you, right?) Sprinkled over yoghurt and grapes, this is the best breakfast I’ve had a in a long while. I’m now in a new breakfast rut, but this is one I’m not keen to get out of.
